September 19, 1998 | Football
In one of the most dramatic finishes of this relatively recent series between the Vols and Gators, Jeff Hall kicked a 41-yard field goal on the first possession of overtime and the Vols won when second-ranked Florida misfired on a 32-yarder.
Florida had tied the game, 17-17, in the third quarter, and the two teams battled through a scoreless fourth quarter before heading to the extra period.
Sixth-ranked Tennessee trailed 3-0 early, but Shawn Bryson scored on a 57-yard run in the first quarter, Hall kicked a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter and Peerless Price caught a 29-yard TD pass from Tee Martin as the Vols never trailed again.
A UT-record crowd of 107,653 saw the contest, which resulted in the first Vol win over the Gators since 1992.
Al Wilson, named SEC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts, had nine tackles and three assists, a tackle for loss, a broken-up pass, one sack and caused a school-record three fumbles.
