Berry Shumpert is in his fourth season as the assistant coach for jumps and multi events. However, 2017-18 will mark Shumpert's seventh season working on Rocky Top as he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Tennessee from 2001-2004.

During the 2017 season, Shumpert coached freshman Darryl Sullivan to a berth at the NCAA Indoor Championship. Sullivan set the Tennessee freshman record in the high jump with a leap of 2.20m/7-2.5. Sullivan scored points for the Vols at the SEC Indoor Championship and earned second-team All-America honors. In the outdoor season, Maya Neal set a career best in the heptathlon with a total of 5,443 points at the SEC Championship. That earned Neal a sixth place finish as she improved 352 points from her freshman to sophomore campaigns. Cidae'a Woods recorded the third-best long jump in school history with a leap of 6.40m/21-0 at the SEC Championship. She followed that up with a 14th place finish at the NCAA East Prelims, just missing a spot in Eugene.

The 2016 season saw Shumpert guide Wesley Edwards to a PR in the high jump as he earned a top five spot at the SEC Outdoor championship. Freshman Mustaqeem Williams claimed two first place finishes in the long jump at the Pepsi Florida Relays and the Seminole Invitational. Shumpert also guided Brielyn Rogers to a first place finish in the triple jump at the Penn Relays. Cidae'a Woods notched top 10 finishes in the triple jump and the long jump at the SEC Championship.

In 2014, Shumpert coached Wesley Edwards to an eighth-place finish in the high jump at the SEC Indoor Championships. Edwards was the first UT scorer in the event since 2010.

Shumpert has been successful on the team and individual levels during his 17-year college coaching career. Prior to returning to Tennessee, Shumpert spent the previous two seasons as the jumps and multi-event coach at Southern California and Purdue. He has also coached at Coastal Carolina, Miami and Radford. He served as associate head at Coastal Carolina from 2006-12, helping lead the team to eight Big South Conference titles.

During the 2013 season at Southern California, he coached Viktor Fajoyomi to a seventh-place finish in the decathlon at the NCAA outdoor championships. USC's men finished fourth and the women were 16th in the final team standings.

In 2013 at Purdue, Geoff Davis took bronze in the high jump at the NCAA outdoor meet and was fifth at the NCAA indoor meet.

Shumpert and his wife, Melinda, have three daughters: Naomi, Mikayla and Lydia. Shumpert earned his master's degree in sport management and Melinda graduated from veterinary school from UT.

During his three years at Tennessee, he helped coach one NCAA champion, 13 All-Americans and nine All-SEC performers. He worked with Tianna Madison, who went on to sweep the 2005 NCAA indoor and outdoor championships and the 2005 Outdoor World Championship in the long jump.

Shumpert has earned a number of coaching awards during his coaching tenure. While at Miami, he was the 2005 and 2006 National Assistant Coach of the Year. He was the 2008 NCAA South East Region Coach of the Year at Coastal Carolina.

He earned his bachelor's degree in marketing at Alabama A&M, where he earned all-conference honors in the long jump and triple jump.

After graduation, Shumpert coached a pair of Alabama high schools to state titles: Blount High School in 1994 and J.O. Johnson High School in 1996. He worked as an assistant coach Coastal Carolina and Radford from from 1997-01.
