Matt McCarthy joined the University of Tennessee Sports Medicine Staff in August of 2023 as an Associate Athletic Trainer for the Football program.
Returning to Knoxville after completing a seasonal position with the football program in 2019, McCarthy will look to contribute to the success of the Tennessee Sports Medicine Department and Football program.
Prior to joining the University of Tennessee, McCarthy spent just over a year working as an Assistant Athletic Trainer with the University of Louisville Football program from June of 2022 to August of 2023. During his tenure, he also held the role of Sport Scientist with the Football program from January of 2023 until his departure.
Prior to his time in Louisville, McCarthy spent two years with the Indianapolis Colts as a Seasonal Athletic Trainer. While working in his seasonal roles, McCarthy gained experience working with high level collegiate and professional athletes.
McCarthy completed his Master of Athletic Training from the University of Arkansas in 2019 where he gained experience with football, men’s basketball, women’s track & field, and local high schools. During his degree program, McCarthy also gained experience as a summer intern with the Buffalo Bills in 2018.
McCarthy earned his Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology and a Minor in Business from Pennsylvania State University in 2017. During his time at Penn State, McCarthy played 4 years of club baseball, and two summer seasons in the Northwoods League for the Green Bay Bullfrogs.
McCarthy holds certifications in Dry Needling Levels 1 & 2 through Evidence in Motion, Functional Movement Screen (FMS) Levels 1 & 2, and QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Program.
McCarthy also holds credentials in Certified Performance and Sport Scientist (CPSS) through the NSCA and Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) through the NASM.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, McCarthy has been a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association since 2017.
