Rhyne Williams fought off one match point to beat the top seed in his opening match Wednesday at the Binghamton (N.Y.) Challenger.Â
Williams kept his composure in the deciding tiebreaker and capitalized on his second match point to beat world No. 112 Dudi Sela 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (8). He faces rising Virginia sophomore Mitchell Frank in the second round.
The winning continued Thursday for Williams as he and former Vol Tennys Sandgren beat Denis Kudla and Drew Courtney 6-2, 6-2. The Tennessee pair is seeded third in the tournament.
Hubble Beats Top Seeds: Big wins for the Vols also carried over across the pond in Poland, where Adam Hubble and fellow Aussie Nima Roshan ousted top-seeded Tomasz Bednarek and Mateusz Kowalczyk 6-3, 3-6, [13-11] at the Ponzan Challenger.Â
Hubble is returning back up the doubles rankings, up 44 positions this week to No. 241. A good run will boost him into the top 200.Â
Smith Leads Breakers Past Philadelphia: John-Patrick Smith won big in the opening men's singles set and made his first appearance on the mixed doubles court as the Orange County Breakers beat the Philadelphia Freedoms 24-19.Â
Smith won the 5-1 against Jan-Michael Gambill in the opening segment and the Breakers never trailed.
