Smith defeated Austrian Gibril Diarra 6-4, 6-4 in his opening-round match. He then faced fellow Aussie and last week's doubles partner Matt Reid, rallying to reach the third round of qualifying with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Smith now faces world No. 144 Philipp Petzschner of Germany for a spot in the main draw. Petzschner, 28, is a former top-40 player who has not won an ATP-level main draw match since March. Smith, meanwhile, is looking for his first career single appearance in an ATP-level event.Â
