The first day of the Knoxville Challenger is in the books, and one Vol is marching on the main draw of the annual tennis tournament at Goodfriend Tennis Center. Tennys Sandgren declined a tournament wild card and played his way into the round of 32. He earned his third victory in three days, beating Marcelo Arevalo, a former Tulsa standout, 6-4, 6-1.Â
Mikelis Libietis had the last match of the evening, taking the court at 10 p.m. for his opening singles match against former top-50 player Frank Dancevic. Just a couple moments made the difference in the match as Libietis lost 7-5, 6-4 in his ATP Challenger-level debut. Hunter Reese lost 6-3, 6-1 to defending tournament champion Tim Smyczek.Â
The Vols will be in featured matches Wednesday evening as well. Tennys Sandgren leads things off at approximately 5:30 p.m. against former NCAA singles champion from Ohio State, Blaz Rola. Libietis and Reese will be in doubles action against former Georgia Tech team Kevin King and Juan Spir. Andrew Dromsky and Jess Jones will play doubles on the other second court.Â
Admission is $10.
