Freshman defensive lineman Derek Barnett continues to etch his name into the Tennessee football record book.Â
Following research, it has been confirmed Barnett is the owner of the Tennessee freshman record for sacks in a season with 7.0 and tackles for a loss by a freshman with 14.0 heading into the game vs. Kentucky.Â
The former freshman record for sacks in a single-season was 4.0 by Ricky Holt in 1981, who was a true freshman that season.Â
The previous record for TFLs by a freshman (including both true and redshirt freshmen) was 7.0 by both Dale Jones in 1983 and Billy Ratliff in 1996. Both Jones and Ratliff were redshirt freshmen.Â
The previous high by a true freshman was 5.5 by Curt Maggitt in 2011. Jacques Smith had 5.0 in 2010.Â
Barnett also holds the Tennessee record for most sacks in a game by a freshman with 3.0. He has accomplished that mark on two occasions, at Ole Miss on Oct. 18 and at South Carolina on Nov. 1.Â
