On Nov. 28, 1987, the Vols overcame the greatest deficit in school history to win a game, as Tennessee trailed Vanderbilt 28-3 in the second quarter and went on to win 38-36. "There were as many big plays in this game and as big a comeback as I can remember," head coach Johnny Majors said after his Vols rallied from a 25-point deficit.
The Vols fell behind, 28-3, midway through the second quarter and trailed until fullback William Howard's six-yard scoring run gave them a 32-28 lead with 9:45 left in the third quarter. The go-ahead touchdown was set up when Vanderbilt's Jeff Mayes fumbled a kickoff return and Tennessee's Chris Treece recovered.
On Nov. 28, 1998, the Vols pounded Vanderbilt, 41-0. Tee Martin threw for 241 yards including 181 to Peerless Price, including a 67-yard TD. Travis Henry and Travis Stephens also ran for touchdowns.
