Lady Vols Post Four Wins Against Strong Field at Carnegie Lake
April 26, 2025 | Rowing
PRINCETON, N.J. – Facing a loaded field that featured three other top-16 programs, the fifth-ranked Tennessee rowing team delivered an impressive performance Saturday on Carnegie Lake in New Jersey, winning four of its five races on the day.
Â
Tennessee's three opponents were No. 6 Princeton, No. 10 Syracuse and No. 16 Ohio State.
Â
The Lady Vols' first varsity eight crew set the tone for the day by posting a blazing time of 5:57.6—with a tailwind—to earn a commanding victory over sixth-ranked Princeton (6:01.1). Tennessee crossed the line more than three seconds ahead of Princeton and finished over 15 seconds clear of third-place Syracuse (6:13.5) and over 25 seconds ahead of No. 16 Ohio State (6:22.8).
Â
For the UT 1V8+ crew, it marked its third time crossing the line ahead of a top-seven nationally ranked boat in the last eight days two weekends, having conquering No. 3 Washington and No. 7 Brown last Saturday at the Big Ten Invitational.
Â
In the second varsity eight race, Tennessee again asserted its dominance, clocking a time of 6:11.6 to beat Princeton by six seconds and finish nearly 17 seconds ahead of third-place, 10th-ranked Syracuse.
Â
Weather conditions began to deteriorate during the fours racing, with the incoming rain building a cross-tail wind, and increasingly choppy water making for tougher racing. Despite the conditions, Tennessee's first varsity four battled to another Lady Vol win, crossing the line in 7:02.8. The Lady Vols edged out No. 6 Princeton by less than two seconds and held off No. 16 Ohio State by roughly three seconds in a tightly contested race. No. 10 Syracuse placed fourth with a final time of 7:42.2.
Â
In the second varsity four event, Tennessee placed second behind sixth-ranked Princeton. The Lady Vols finished just under three seconds behind the Tigers, while holding off No. 10 Syracuse and 16th-ranked Ohio State.
Â
Tennessee closed the day with a hard-fought victory in the third varsity eight race, as its crew edged No. 6 Princeton's by under a second with a time of 6:28.8. Syracuse placed third, nearly eight seconds behind UT's winning pace.
Â
In total, Tennessee boats finished ahead of a combined 13 ranked boats on the day, including sweeping all three of the eights races.
Â
Up next, Tennessee has two weeks off before returning to Oak Ridge for the third time this season, as Melton Hill Lake serves as the site of the 2025 SEC Championship on May 11.
