Vols, Lady Vols Continue to Excel in Latest Academic Progress Rate Data
June 04, 2024 | General, Tennessee Tailored
Eleven Tennessee teams earned a perfect 1,000 single-year APR for the 2022-23 academic year
The NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) data Tuesday, and once again, multiple Tennessee athletics programs posted perfect 1,000 single- and multi-year scores.
Every Division I sports team across the nation calculates its APR each academic year, like a report card. Scholarship student-athletes each semester earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Data released for this multi-year cohort includes scores from the 2022-23, 2021-22, 2020-21 and 2019-20 academic years. For APR purposes, indoor and outdoor track & field scores are computed together, so Tennessee has 18 teams/sports that are scored.
"Our competitive championship culture starts with serious-minded men and women who are striving to excel both in their sport and in the classroom. The APR data demonstrates their remarkable success," Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White said. "Marshall Steward and his entire Thornton Athletics Student Life Center team are dedicated to enhancing our student-athlete experience by providing high-level academic support, professional development, and community engagement."
Eleven Tennessee teams earned a perfect 1,000 single-year APR for the 2022-23 academic year: men's basketball, men's cross country, men's golf, men's swimming and diving, women's basketball, women's cross country, rowing, women's golf, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, and volleyball.
In multi-year data, 14 of Tennessee's 18 scored programs tied or increased their marks from last year. And 13 of UT's programs earned multi-year scores equal to or higher than the national average of all Division I programs in their respective sports.
Six programs posted perfect multi-year APRs: men's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's golf, women's tennis and volleyball.
"What our student-athletes, coaches, and staff have established at Rocky Top is truly remarkable," Senior Associate Athletics Director & Associate Provost Marshall Steward said. "They continue to find ways to raise the bar in every measurable academic category, and this latest release of APR data shows there are no exceptions. This reflects the unparalleled era of academic and athletic achievement at Tennessee Athletics, a result of our unwavering commitment to comprehensive excellence and strategic investments in key areas."
Every Division I sports program submits data to have its Academic Progress Rate calculated each academic year. The NCAA reports both single‐year and four‐year rates, based on which penalties for poor academic performance are based.
National aggregates are based on all teams with usable, member‐provided data. APRs for each team, lists of teams receiving public recognition and those receiving sanctions are normally available online through the NCAA's searchable database. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, normal operations of awarding public recognition to high-performing programs and assessing penalties to poorly performing programs have been halted until Spring 2024.
