Women’s Tennis Central: NCAA Stillwater Super Regional

STILLWATER, Okla. – For the second consecutive year, the Tennessee women's tennis team is headed back to the Super Regional round of the 2024 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament. The Lady Volunteers will go head-to-head against top-seeded Oklahoma State on Saturday at Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla., with the first serve set for 4 p.m. ET.
The No. 16-seeded Lady Volunteers (20-7, 9-4) surpassed both their First and Second Round opponents of the 2024 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament. The squad posted two consecutive sweeps against Murray State and No. 21 Duke, propelling the Big Orange to their first back-to-back Sweet 16 appearance since 2004.

SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS
Top-seeded Oklahoma State (29-0, 13-0 Big 12) enters the tournament in the midst of a twenty-nine-match winning streak. The Cowgirls maintained a flawless record in conference play and cruised through their league tournament, dominating all three of their matches with a combined score of 12-1.
The team garnered significant recognition in the end-of-season Big 12 awards, securing three out of the four yearly accolades. Chris Young garnered his second honor as Big 12 Coach of the Year while Ange Oby Kajuru claimed Big 12 Player of the Year. Olivia Lincer was tabbed Big 12 Women's Tennis Freshman of the Year, and Anastasiya Komar earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Kajuru, Komar and Lucia Peyre were named to the All-Big 12 First Team Singles crew along with Safiya Carrington and Ayumi Miyamoto making it on the All-Big 12 Second Team in singles. Kajuru and Komar also were named to the All-Big 12 First Team for doubles, while Miyamoto paired up with Gonzalez earned All-Big 12 Second Team Doubles.
The Lady Vols and the Cowgirls enter the match with their all-time series tied at one apiece. The last time the two squads met was on Feb. 17, 2001, when the Big Orange notched a 5-2 win against the Pokes. Before that, OSU posted an 8-1 victory against the Big Orange on Feb.18, 1989.
In addition, Oklahoma State is hosting the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in program history.
SUPER REGIONAL HISTORY
Tennessee has earned a spot in a Super Regional 11 times, with 2024 marking the second straight year. The Lady Volunteers last advanced beyond the First and Second Rounds in 2023, defeating SEMO and Wake Forest. This season also marks the second time the Lady Vols are headed to a Super Regional under the direction of head coach Alison Ojeda. Tennessee has made its first back-to-back Super Regional appearances for the first time since 2003 and 2004.
PUNCHING THE TICKET TO STILLWATER
Two Lady Vols were selected to compete in the 2024 NCAA Singles Championships later this month in Stillwater. Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase will begin play following the completion of the NCAA Team Championship during the final weekend of May. Cabezas is seeded No. 9-16, clinching ITA All-America status.
