McCallum Secures SEC Runner of the Week Acclaim
April 23, 2024 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference office announced Tuesday afternoon that Tennessee sophomore sprinter T'Mars McCallum was tabbed the SEC Men's Runner of the Week. This honor comes after McCallum was recognized as the NCAA Division I National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday.
The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, native put together a spectacular performance in the men's 100-meter dash on Saturday at the USC Outdoor Open, clocking in at 9.94 seconds for the fastest time in the NCAA this season and the second-fastest mark in the world in 2024. McCallum's time obliterated his previous personal-best of 10.13, and he became the second Vol in program history to dip under 10 seconds in the 100-meter dash with a legal wind (+2.0 m/s). He ranks second on Tennessee's all-time charts behind Christian Coleman's collegiate record of 9.82 (+1.3) set during the VFL's Bowerman winning campaign in 2017.
Additionally, McCallum's time equaled the No. 21 performer in collegiate history, and he became just the sixth sophomore in collegiate history to run 9.95 or faster with a legal wind.
His performance marked the second 100-meter collegiate lead by a Tennessee sprinter in as many weeks, as Lady Vol senior Jacious Sears clocked a time of 10.77 at the Tom Jones Memorial on Saturday, April 13, that currently sits at the peak of the 2024 World Athletics Toplist. The Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, native was only 0.02 seconds off the collegiate record set by Sha'Carri Richardson in 2019.
McCallum also had a hand in Tennessee's season-best mark of 39.21 seconds in the 4x100-meter relay at South Carolina, running the second leg and helping the Vols secure the win. The time ranks the Vols as the No. 11 school in the nation and No. 13 time overall in the event this year.
This marks the first conference weekly honors of McCallum's career and the sixth for Tennessee during the 2023-24 campaign. Graduate hurdler Clement Ducos was most recently recognized on April 9 for his collegiate leading performance in the 400-meter hurdles at the Tennessee Invite.
