Caribe, Crooks Medal in 100 Free at Short Course World Championships

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Tennessee's Olympic sprinter duo of Gui Caribe and Jordan Crooks claimed medals in the 100 free Thursday evening during the 2024 Short Course World Championships.

Caribe narrowly out touched his teammate in the racing, claiming silver with a time of 45.47 to break the Brazilian national record. Crooks took third with a 45.48 effort. For Caribe, it was the first medal of his career on at world championship event. This was the second short course worlds medal for Crooks, who is the reigning champion in the 50 free from the 2022 edition in Melbourne, Australia.

The Big Orange saw three other swimmers break national records on the day. After competing in the 200 free at the Olympics in Paris, Julia Mrozinski helped the German 4x200 free relay shatter the country's previous best time with a 7:41.65 effort during prelims. The group went on to finish sixth in finals.

Lamar Taylor broke his second Bahamian national record of the week, when he touched the wall in 23.51 in the 50 back. Former Lady Vol Ellen Walshe posted her third Irish record this meet with a blazing 58.55 effort to take ninth during the 100 IM semifinals.

Rounding out the competition for the day was a pair of semifinalist finishes in the 50 back. Signee Mizuki Hirai finished ninth overall with a time of 26.26, missed the finals by 0.01 seconds. Three-time Olympian Kira Toussaint tied for 12th in the event.

Continuing the busy week, Tennessee swimming & diving has a dual meet against Kentucky on Friday afternoon in Lexington. The Big Orange divers also begin three days of competition at the USA Winter Nationals as well, with Lynae Shorter kicking things off on 1-meter. Here's the schedule for the rest of the week:
