BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Thanks to some of the best times in the country and top-10 marks in school history, four Tennessee swimmers and divers garnered SEC weekly honors, the league office announced Tuesday.
Â
The Big Orange swept both the male and female honors for SEC Swimmer of the Week and SEC Freshman of the Week. Senior Jordan Crooks and sophomore Camille Spink earned the top swimming honors, while newcomers Bennett Greene and Ella Jansen were recognized for their collegiate debut performances.
Â
No stranger to being SEC Swimmer of the Week, this marked the ninth time Crooks has received the award, and it's his 12th overall weekly honor from the league during his career. The George Town, Cayman Islands native won both of his individual events and helped both Vol relays finish first during UT's meet at No. 11 Louisville.
Â
In the 50 free, Crooks clocked a 19.07 mark, which is the No. 5 time in the nation this season. He followed that performance up by posting the No. 8 time in the country for the 100 fly at 45.67. The final race of the meet saw Crooks and the Vols throw down an SEC-best 2:49.23 effort in the 400 free relay. The mark was the fifth-fastest time in program history and is third nationally this year. The Big Orange tied for first in the 200 medley relay, clocking a time of 1:23.96.
Â
For Spink, this marked the third conference weekly honor for her career after winning freshman of the week accolades twice last season. The Haymarket, Virginia native enjoyed a remarkable opening meet to the 2024-25 campaign, winning both of her individual events as well as a relay against No. 7 Louisville. She swept the sprint freestyles with SEC-best marks, touching the wall in 21.87 in the 50 free and in 47.30 in the 100 free. Both efforts are top two in the nation so far this season, with her mark in the 100 free leading the country.
Â
Swimming the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay and leadoff on the 400 free relay, Spink helped the Lady Vols achieve NCAA 'A' Cuts in both events. Tennessee won the 200 medley relay thanks to a 1:36.15 effort, and it finished second in the 400 free relay with a 3:13.19 mark. Both times rank third nationally, and the 400 free relay is the fastest in the SEC.
Â
Competing in his first meet for his hometown school, Greene won the 3-meter event and placed third on 1-meter to lead the Vols in diving against the Cardinals. Putting together a solid list on 3-meter, the Knoxville native netted 60-plus points on each of his last two dives and secured the victory with a 63 on a Reverse 1 1/2 Somersault 3 1/2 Twist Free for his final dive of the day. He won with a score of 336.38. On 1-meter, he clawed back from a poor score on his first dive that saw him in eighth going into the second round to finishing third overall (321.00) thanks to three dives that went for more than 55 points.
Â
Making her much-anticipated debut as one of the top recruits in the 2024 class and coming off an Olympic appearance with Team Canada, Jansen recorded a pair of top-10 times in program history during her first meet with the Lady Vols. In the 500 free, she finished second after clocking a 4:40.67 mark, which ranks sixth nationally and seventh in program history. She added a pair of third-place efforts in the 200 fly (1:55.85) and 200 IM (1:58.37). Her time in the 200 fly marked the 10th fastest in the UT record books.
Â
The Vols and Lady Vols are back in action on November 19-22 for the annual Tennessee Invitational at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
