Hattie Wins on 3-meter, UT Wraps Up Day Two of Tennessee Diving Invite

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Bryden Hattie claimed a victory on 3-meter to close out the second day of the Tennessee Diving Invitational on Thursday.Â
Â
Hattie went into the final round of dives needing 69.6 points to secure a victory in the event. The Victoria, British Columbia, Canada native landed an event-best dive of 81.6 on the Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 2 Twist Pike in the last round of competition to take home first with a 404.75 effort.Â
 Â
"Bryden was coming off of a bit of time off, and I felt like he did two really solid lists," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "It was interesting, because his finishes in the entry list were a little sharper than his finishes on the final's lists. However, his tops, takeoffs and board work in the finals was a little better. We just need to put those two together. That's part of the time of the year, coming off a little break and shaking off a little bit of rust. I was really happy, he was really consistent all day long. There are a few things he needs to sharpen up on, but he did a nice job. Pleased with Bryden for two really good lists, winning prelims and then a good 404-point performance to win the final."
The senior was also the only diver to eclipse more than 400 points during 3-meter prelims, posting a score of 413.10. He had three dives of over 70 points, placing himself nearly 40 points ahead of the next diver going into finals.Â
Â
Nick Stone narrowly missed out on qualifying for finals, placing 14th (322.75). Owen Redfearn (319.10) and Jacob Reasor (317.90) came in 16th and 17th, while Harper Thornett (312.70) finished in 19th place.Â
On the women's side, Tanesha Lucoe tallied a third-place finish on platform, obtaining a score of 262.35. Maddie Reese placed sixth with a score of 240.80, while Elle Renner (200.30) finished in 20th in the finals-only event.Â
Â
The day concluded with the women's team event, where the Lady Vols saw Lucoe, Reese and Renner on the boards. The trio came in third place, finishing with a score of 280.15.Â
"I have to say, I'm really proud of Tanesha's performance today", Parrington said. "She came back from the holiday break kind of sick, so she's been in and out. That list that she did today was her first 10-meter list in about three weeks, maybe four weeks. We did some leadups, preparation dives, but did not go off 10-meter in the warmup prior to the event. That was kind of like getting her dives off for the first time in a month, and was really steady today. Very, very proud and very, very pleased with that performance. Maddie Reese, she was steady, consistently steady, but needed to be a little crisper, a little faster in her dives. Maybe a little more aggression. Then, that'll give her a little better finish herself. She was consistent, and that was what I wanted to see. Elle was little bit back and forth; she has a foot injury going on. It was a little bit hard for her to do her takeoffs, so really proud. She was a real warrior out there today."
Â
The Tennessee Diving Invite final round will begin Friday at 11:30 a.m. The Lady Vols will compete in the 1-meter, while the men will be on platform.Â
