KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – On Thursday, Tennessee Director of Swimming & Diving Matt Kredich announced the hiring of Caleb Lawrence as an assistant coach. A former assistant at Richmond, Lawrence is the latest addition to Tennessee's coaching cohort, which features three additions this offseason.Â
Â
"We are really excited to bring Caleb into the Tennessee Volunteer family," Kredich said. "Caleb will bring a lot to our program - great energy, a compelling vision for our team and some great coaching experience at outstanding college and club teams. He's been mentored by some of the best and most innovative coaches in swimming today, most recently by Matt Barany at the University of Richmond. He is known as a relentless recruiter and a coach who puts a very high value on relationships with the athletes he coaches."
Â
Lawrence joins the staff after spending the past two seasons at Richmond. While with the Spiders, he assisted in coaching back-to-back top-three team finishes at the A-10 Championships. He worked extensively with all aspects of recruiting and training during his tenure at Richmond alongside Barany, the established head coach of the Spiders.Â
Â
At Richmond, Lawrence also helped the women's swimming & diving program achieve tremendous success in the classroom. The Spiders' Fall 2022 team GPA of 3.82 ranked second nationally out of all women's swimming & diving programs. In February 2023, the swimming & diving team won the Richmond Team Academic Award, and swimmer Claire O'Shaughnessy was named the University of Richmond Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Â
"I couldn't be more excited to join the Volunteer family," Lawrence said. "I have admired Matt Kredich and his staff for some time now and would like to extend a huge thanks to him and Senior Associate Athletic Director Tyler Johnson for this incredible opportunity. I can't wait to begin competing for championships on Rocky Top!"
Â
Prior to his tenure at Richmond, Lawrence served as a volunteer assistant coach at Notre Dame for three seasons. He assisted in coaching multiple podium finishes at the ACC Championships, 30 CSCAA All-Americans and also helped guide Jack Hoagland to an ACC Freshman of the Year award during the 2019-20 season.Â
Â
While coaching at Notre Dame, Lawrence spent two seasons as an assistant coach for Irish Aquatics, a USA Swimming Level 2 program. During his tenure, he worked with many athletes ranging from novice to Division I swimmers.Â
Â
In his first two seasons as an assistant coach with the TAC Titans, a USA Swimming Gold Medal program, he helped train multiple national-level athletes such as Charlotte Hook and Olympians Ashley Twichell and Claire Curzan.Â
Â
Lawrence graduated from NC State in 2018 with a degree in Sport Management while also serving as a student assistant for the swimming & diving program during the 2017-18 campaign.Â
