Webb Announces 2023-24 Men’s Golf Schedule
July 19, 2023 | Men's Golf
Less than two months out from the start of the fall season, Tennessee head men's golf coach Brennan Webb announced the Vols' complete 2023-24 schedule Wednesday.
Tennessee's schedule consists of nine regular season events, including September's SEC Fall Preview/Match Play Championship for the third consecutive year. The Vols are scheduled to compete in four fall tournaments in addition to the SEC Fall Preview event, headlined by the Visit Knoxville Collegiate—Tennessee's first home tournament in 18 years.
In the spring, four regular season tournaments precede April's SEC Championships, which are set to be held at St. Simons Island, Georgia, for the 23rd consecutive year.
Overall, Tennessee is scheduled to play tournaments in six different states and ventured outside the United States mainland twice—once to Puerto Rico and once to Mexico.
The Vols' fall slate begins at nearby Tennessee National Golf Club with the Tennessee Intercollegiate—the program's first home tournament since the 2005-06 season.
Just over two weeks later from Sept. 25-27, the third edition of the SEC Fall Preview/Match Play Championship takes place at Birmingham Country Club. At last year's event—which consisted of 54 holes of stroke play and a match play final—Tennessee finished in second place after three rounds of stroke play and then defeated No. 1 Vanderbilt in the match play final.
Four days after the conclusion of the SEC Fall Preview, Tennessee is set to tee off just its second ever regular-season event in the state of Indiana at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana. Last season at the Purdue Fall Invitational in West Lafayette, the Vols captured the team title, while Lewis claimed the individual crown.
The Vols' penultimate fall tournament comes at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate from Oct. 13-15—marking the fourth time in the last five seasons that UT has participated in the event.
Tennessee closes the fall with the Cypress Point Invitational from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1 in Monterey, California—the Vols' first appearance in the state of California since winning the 2020 Lamkin Grips Classic in San Diego.
For the third straight season and fourth time in the past five years, Tennessee tees off its fall slate at the Puerto Rico Classic at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico from Feb. 11-13. During the 2021-22 season, Bryce Lewis tied the then-individual program record for best 54-hole score in relation to par with a 16-under performance that resulted in a second-place finish. Last season, the Vols finished tied for seventh place at the event.
After starting the spring in Puerto Rico, Tennessee travels to Mexico for the Cabo Collegiate from March 3-5—also marking the third straight year in which the Vols have competed in that event.
After another trip to California for The Goodwin from March 28-30 in San Francisco, Tennessee returns to the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial in Charlottesville, Virginia, from April 8-9—where in 2022, VFL Spencer Cross captured the individual title.
Two weeks later from April 24-28, Tennessee heads to Sea Island Golf Club for the SEC Championships. The Vols finished in first place in the stroke play portion of last season's SEC Championship, with Caleb Surratt claiming the individual title.
Tennessee is coming off of a 2022-23 season that was highlighted by three team tournament titles and featured six top-two team finishes—which stands as the second-most in a single season in program history. Surratt, a First Team All-America selection and the SEC Freshman of the Year, and Lewis, a Second Team All-SEC selection return to Tennessee's lineup for Webb's sixth season at the helm of the program.
