KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee head coach Diana Cantu announced the addition of LVFL Anna Newell to her staff as an assistant on Monday.
Newell joins Cantú and fellow assistant coach Nic Robinson, who are each entering their third seasons at Tennessee in 2023-24.
"I am so excited to welcome Anna back to Big Orange Country," Cantú said. "Anna is a former Lady Vol golfer who had great success as a student-athlete at UT. As a two-time All-American, she represented this program with excellence and pride. Her passion for the Lady Vol legacy and our Tennessee traditions is truly unmatched. As a golfer, coach and mentor, Anna always brings great energy. Her experience playing at the highest level and as a golf instructor will be a great asset to this program."
"My time at the University of Tennessee and representing the Lady Volunteer golf program has shaped my life over the years," Newell said. "With such a historic program, I am honored to be able help shape that legacy again."
Boasting professional golf experience, Newell competed in the Symetra Tour Rookie Season in 2018 where she started in 11 events, making two cuts and posting a top-15 finish at the PHC Classic.
For the last six years, Newell has been involved in golf operations at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, starting out in Outside Operations in 2018. In 2020, she became an Assistant Golf Professional, where her responsibilities included helping run customer service, tee sheet management and merchandise at the golf shop, monitoring pace of play and assisting with running events and tournaments. Newell was promoted to Director of Women's Golf in 2021 where she oversaw all ladies' golf programs at the club, orgranized and ran women's tournaments and provided instructed to members at all levels.
During her collegiate career on Rocky Top, Newell posted a 73.57 career stroke average, the second lowest in program history, and 48 career rounds of par or better, the third most by a Lady Vol. In her first season and playing alongside her sister AJ, Newell was named SEC All-Freshman after appearing in 11 tournaments and leading the team with a 73.00 stroke average.
In 2015-16, Newell earned All-American and First-Team All-SEC honors after recording 17 rounds of par or better, a program best, and notching six top-10 finishes, including her incredible 18-under performance, the lowest 54-hole score in Lady Vol history, to claim the individual title at the Las Vegas Showdown. At the 2016 NCAA Championship, Newell shot -6 to log a fourth-place finish, the highest finish by a Lady Vol at the event in program history.
