Dylan Jacobs Earns Fourth Consecutive Bowerman Watch List Nod
May 04, 2023 | Track & Field, Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS — Tennessee standout graduate student Dylan Jacobs made his fourth consecutive appearance on the men's watch list for The Bowerman award in an update from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday afternoon.
Jacobs is one of 10 NCAA Division I athletes currently in the running for collegiate track & field's highest individual honor, presented annually to the most outstanding male and female athletes in the nation. Tennessee alum Christian Coleman (2014-17) won the award in 2017 following a historic season in which he captured four NCAA titles and set two all-time collegiate records in the indoor 60-meter (6.45) and outdoor 100-meter (9.82).
A long-distance specialist from Orland Park, Illinois, Jacobs has put together one of the most remarkable campaigns in program history in his debut season at Tennessee. After being recognized as the USTFCCCA National Track Athlete of the Year for the 2022-23 indoor season, he opened his outdoor season on April 13 at the Bryan Clay Invitational and grabbed his third school record with a time of 28:01.53 over 10,000 meters.
His phenomenal indoor season culminated with an individual national title in the men's 5,000-meter at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, running a time of 13:37.59 for the fastest indoor 5k at high altitude in collegiate history.
Earlier this year, Jacobs posted Southeastern Conference records and all-time top five performances in both the indoor 3,000m and 5,000m. His season-best time of 7:36.89 in the 3k was the No. 2 performance in collegiate history and .47 seconds shy of the NCAA record, while his fastest 5k of 13:11.01 stands as the No. 3 all-time collegiate performance and ranked fifth on the 2023 world list.
He starred at his first SEC Championships, winning the 3k in a meet record time of 7:52.49 and closing out Tennessee's DMR gold medal performance with a 3:56 split over the 1,600-meter leg. His 12.5 points scored led the Vols to a fifth-place finish at the conference meet and were part of 35 points tallied by the UT men's distance unit.
At the conclusion of the 2022-23 indoor season, Jacobs was recognized as the USTFCCCA National Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Vol to earn that honor since Coleman in 2017. Jacobs was tabbed USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week on Feb. 14 after his record-breaking 3k at The Millrose Games and was honored twice as the SEC Men's Runner of the Week earlier this winter.
Jacobs is the fourth Tennessee athlete to appear on the men's watch list for The Bowerman alongside Darryl Sullivan (2020), Coleman (2017), and Jake Blankenship (2016).
The USTFCCCA will release two more updates to The Bowerman watch lists in May (post-outdoor conference championships) and June (post-NCAA DI first rounds), and 10 semifinalists will be named after the conclusion of the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Six finalists (three men, three women) will be selected by the Bowerman Advisory Board, and voting will take place into July. The winners will be announced at the annual USTFCCCA convention in December, held this year in Aurora, Colorado, at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center.
