Seven UT Track Athletes Recognized On CSC Academic All-District Team

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The College Sports Communicators announced Wednesday that a program-record seven Tennessee track & field athletes were named to the 2023 CSC Academic All-District Team. Emily Knight, Uchechi Nwogwugwu, Sarah Schmitt, Nicole Sreenan, Canaan Anderson, Peyton Davis and Dylan Jacobs were recognized for their combined performances on the track and in the classroom.

To be nominated for track & field Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must have reached at least sophomore academic standing, attained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point and competed in at least 50 percent of the competitions over the course of cross country, indoor track and outdoor track seasons in which they are eligible.

Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced June 28 (women) and June 29 (men).

A four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Knight recently completed her bachelor's degree in Sport Management and was recognized by her college as a Volunteer of Distinction for Professional Promise. The Severna Park, Maryland, native ran a lifetime-best mark in the 800-meter in the final race of her career, clocking a time of 2:11.45 on April 29.

Nwogwugwu joined the Lady Vols last season after earning an Ivy League degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Health & Socities and rounded out her master's in public health from UT earlier this month. She helped Tennessee qualify for the 2022 outdoor national meet in the 4x400-meter relay and will serve as an alternate on the same relay for the upcoming NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.

Fresh off her first appearance at the NCAA East Prelims, Schmitt received Academic All-District recognition as a sophomore majoring in economics. The Midlothian, Virginia, native scored three points at the 2023 SEC Outdoor Championships in the pole vault and posted a lifetime-best mark of 4.10m (13-1.5) at the HPU VertKlasse Meeting, ranking seventh in program history. Additionally, Schmitt was recently chosen as a member of the 2023-24 VOLeaders Academy.

Sreenan earned her bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Grand Valley State University before transferring to Rocky Top, where she earned her master's in Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication in May of 2023. The three-time Division II national champion has been a strong anchor leg on the Lady Vol 4x100-meter relay this season, helping UT place fifth at the conference meet in 43.48 seconds and qualifying for nationals after an 11th-place finish at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds.

The fastest miler in school history, Anderson also stands out academically as a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. The Murfreesboro native produced two school records during the 2023 indoor season, clocking a time of 4:00.13 in the mile at the Vanderbilt Invitational (Jan. 21) and running the opening leg of UT's 9:22.65 DMR at the Alex Wilson Invitational (Feb. 18). He has served as a member of the 2022-23 VOLeaders Academy class that will travel to the Philippines this summer for cultural immersion service trip.

The Centralia, Missouri, native has scored at four conference meets over the course of his career, including a recent career-best 7,264 points in the decathlon to place seventh at the 2023 SEC Outdoor Championships.

A five-time member of The Bowerman watch list, Jacobs has shined in his debut campaign at Tennessee while maintaining a high academic standard in the classroom. After receiving his bachelor's in business analytics from Notre Dame, Jacobs transferred to UT and is working towards his master's in management & human resources. The distance standout has demolished four school records this spring and was recognized as the National Athlete of the Year for the 2023 indoor season after picking up two SEC titles in the 3k and DMR and claiming his third career NCAA individual championship in the indoor 5k.
