Jacobs Books 10k Nationals Trip, Vols Post 11 Advancing Marks At NCAA East Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The defending 10k national champion will aim to defend his title in Austin, Texas, in two weeks as Tennessee graduate student Dylan Jacobs qualified for the NCAA Championships with his performance on Wednesday at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. The Orland Park, Illinois, native placed ninth in the 10,000-meter semifinal with a time of 29:09.57 to secure his spot at the national meet.
Jacobs was the first Vol to punch his ticket to outdoor nationals this season, with plenty more opportunities available on Friday as UT posted 11 qualifying marks in the running event first rounds Wednesday evening at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
Showcasing its depth in the hurdle events, Tennessee had seven athletes advance to quarterfinals in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles first rounds. Devon Brooks (13.42), Rasheem Brown (13.57) and Leonard Mustari (13.58) each automatically qualified in the 110-meter hurdles with top-three finishes in their heats, while Jesse Henderson grabbed the sixth and final timed qualifier with a mark of 13.77 seconds. The collegiate leading Brooks had the second-fastest mark in the first round, while Brown and Mustari placed seventh and eighth overall.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Tennessee's trio of Clement Ducos (50.46), Jakwan Hale (50.78) and Rasheeme Griffith (51.21) each moved on after earning top-three finishes in heats six, four and two. Ducos won his heat and was the fastest Vol in the competition, placing seventh among the East preliminary field.
"Hurdle U" will run the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles quarterfinals Friday evening at 6:15 p.m. and 7:25 p.m. ET, respectively, aiming for top-12 finishes that will qualify for the national championships two weeks later at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Junior sprinter Javonte Harding showed out in his two events, most notably winning his heat of the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.18 seconds to automatically qualify for Friday's quarterfinal. The Prince George, Virginia, native also advanced in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.14, one of nine athletes in the East region to move on past both the 100- and 200-meter first rounds.
A pair of homegrown Tennessee seniors also grabbed auto-qualifiers in their respective events on Wednesday, beginning with Memphis native Emmanuel Bynum in the 400-meter dash after winning heat five with a time of 45.88 seconds to place third overall. Fifth-year Vol and Nashville product Joe Hoots followed, placing third in his 800-meter heat with a time of 1:49.83 to advance to Friday's quarterfinal in the two-lapper.

The second day of regional action will wrap up with sophomore Rachel Sutliff running the 10,000-meter at approximately 9:10 p.m.
