AZUSA, Calif. — A pair of Vols made their outdoor track debuts for the Big Orange late Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational, notching top-five marks in program history in the men's 5,000-meter run. Redshirt sophomore Yaseen Abdalla turned in a personal-best time of 13:44.16 to become the No. 2 performer all-time at UT, while graduate student Nate Kawalec went 13:48.74 to land at No. 5 on UT's all-time list in the outdoor 5k.
In the first year under director of cross country/distance Sean Carlson, Tennessee has logged 19 marks on the school's all-time top 10 lists, including five through the first month of outdoor season.
Fifth-year senior Karl Thiessen also logged a new PR in the 5k Friday night, running 14:02.11 to place fourth in his heat. On the women's side, junior Knoxville native Callie Tucker won her 5,000-meter heat and shaved 17 seconds off her personal best with a time of 16:39.70.
After a promising cross country campaign last fall, freshman Andie-Marie Jones made her UT track debut in the 5k and registered a time of 16:52.71 for the Lady Vols.
