Vols Finish Second at Mason Rudolph Championship; Lewis Individual Runner-Up
April 12, 2023 | Men's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The 14th-ranked Tennessee men's golf team finished in second place as a team at the Mason Rudolph Championship Wednesday, led by redshirt junior Bryce Lewis' individual runner-up finish.
Â
The Vols' second-place team finish is the team's fifth top-two finish this season and comes on the heels of a team title last week at the Mossy Oak Collegiate. Tennessee shot 11-under as a team over the tournament's three rounds, edging out top-25 SEC foes No. 20 Ole Miss and No. 16 Mississippi State.
Â
Lewis' second-place individual finish marked his fifth-career top-five finish and second this season after he captured the individual title at the Purdue Fall Invitational back in October.
Â
A native of nearby Hendersonville, Tennessee, Lewis shot a 3-under 68 in each of the tournament's three rounds—finishing 9-under for the week with 15 total birdies.
Â
Freshman Caleb Surratt was just two strokes behind Lewis, finishing 7-under and tied for fifth place—his third top-five finish of the season and third straight top-10 finish after back-to-back sixth-place finishes at Tennessee's last two tournaments.
Â
Surratt shot 3-under 68 on both Monday and Tuesday before carding a 1-under 70 on Wednesday.
Â
Competing as a member of Tennessee's lineup for just the third time in his young collegiate career, freshman Josh Hill was Tennessee's third-highest finisher with a tied-for-26th-place finish—his best finish as a member of the Vols' lineup. Hill shot a three-round total of 2-over.
Â
Jake Hall and Laurent Desmarchais both finished tied for 35th place, shooting identical 2-over scores during round three on Wednesday and 4-over for the week.
Â
Lance Simpson competed individually, but recorded his third-career top-15 finish with a tied-for-15th-place finish. Simpson finished with a 4-over round, but carded rounds of 1-under and 5-under on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
Â
UP NEXT: The Mason Rudolph Championships marked the end of Tennessee's regular season competition. The Vols are set to compete next week in the SEC Championships in Sea Island, Georgia, beginning on Wednesday.
Â
LEWIS CONTINUES TO ASCEND IN RECORD BOOKS: With Wednesday's 3-under 68—his third consecutive day shooting 3-under par—Bryce Lewis moved into a tie for second place in program history with his 66th career round of par or better.
Â
Lewis is now tied with Lorenzo Scalise (2014-18), who also had 66, and is just one behind David Skinns (2001-05)—the all-time program leader with 67 career rounds of par or better.
