KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Junior Bryden Hattie posted his second NCAA Championships qualifying effort of the week Monday, recording the top score on 3-meter during the Zone B Diving Championships at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
Â
Hattie dominated the springboards once again after notching the best effort on 1-meter Sunday. He finished with a combined score of 849.00. The junior from Victoria, British Columbia, nearly posted a personal best during the prelims thanks to a 428.75 score. The momentum carried into the finals as he cruised to the victory, which was capped by a stellar Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 2 Twist Pike that netted 85.00 points. In total, six of his dives on the day went for 70 or more points.
Â
"Just a pretty remarkable two-list performance today while coming off of a remarkable two-list performance on 1-meter yesterday," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "It says a lot to his conditioning and his training. Some of those guys are clearly above the others on that list, and you just knew they were going to get the job done. Bryden is in that group. They're all competing against each other. Those guys don't want to give an inch because they all know that they're going to see each other again in a few weeks at NCAAs. The name of the game at this meet is get qualified and move on. He's done that, and all he has to do now is get top 12 tomorrow, which is right in his wheelhouse. To end the competition today, after two long lists, with an 85 pointer was a real punctuation mark. To see him get up and compete and do it like that, it was great to see."
Â
Nick Stone and Jacob Reasor joined Hattie in the final but didn't hit the qualifying mark. Stone posted a 349.20 effort during the prelims before notching a 346.00 in the finals to finish 15th. Reasor placed 17th overall with a combined score of 674.00.
Â
"Really proud of both those guys," Parrington said. "Nick is really showing some stuff, and he's impressing some of these judges. We need to get him more experience and get a little more meat on those bones so he can push the board down and get a little bigger degree of difficulty. With his consistency, that's going to pay big dividends. Getting this experience has been really helpful for him. Jake, disappointing end on his last dive there but pretty consistent as well in both events. I'm pleased with Jake's springboard performance."
Â
During the women's 1-meter, two Lady Vols advanced to the finals but came up short of earning a qualifying spot. Elle Renner posted a combined score of 537.60 to finish 14th overall, while Tanesha Lucoe (494.35) came in 18th. Grace Cable just missed advancing to the finals, taking 19th with a 260.20 effort.
Â
"Some real ups and downs there for us today and a couple of gut punches there," Parrington said. "Just thinking about the prelims, Grace actually had five real solid dives with a couple of really good dives. One of the dives that I rely on—sometimes I call it a money dive—she got probably the best top I've ever seen on the dive, but she couldn't quite handle it. That was a real disappointment for her because I felt like she should have been in the mix. Talking about some of the others, they all did a really good job. Kara Holt had one of the best 1-meter lists she's ever had. She did a great job. Elle did some of the best dives I've seen her do on 1-meter in her career, and I'm really proud of that. She did a fantastic job really sets himself up well as we go higher. Tanesha got a gut punch on fourth or fifth dive. She got off the corner of the board. If she hit a good one there, she's right in the mix, so that's a real disappointment. But again, some really good stuff done, and we've got to move past that. We have two more days to go for them."

Competition continues Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the women's 3-meter followed by the men's platform. There are nine qualifying spots for the women and nine for the men. Here's the full schedule along with streaming links.
