KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Junior Bryden Hattie earned his spot at the 2023 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships on Sunday afternoon, posting the top score on 1-meter during the Zone B Diving Championships at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
After coming out on top during the prelims with a 379.75 effort, Hattie eclipsed the 72-point margin on three of his dives in finals to net a 400.95 score. With a combined mark of 780.70, he finished in first by more than 50 points to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships in the event.
Also competing in the finals, Nick Stone found himself in a heated battle to finish inside the top 12. He landed a Reverse 1 1/2 Somersault 2 1/2 Twist Free on his final dive to score 63 points, giving him the edge to finish 12th overall with a combined score of 659.80. By finishing inside the top 12, Stone will earn a spot in the 1-meter competition at NCAAs if he earns a qualifying spot on 3-meter or platform this week.
Jacob Reasor (628.10) finished 17th in the 1-meter finals, marking the first time in his career in which he advanced to the finals in the event at zones. Owen Redfearn came in 25th with a 282.85 score.
"I'm certainly extremely pleased with day one of our zone meet," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "This is such a pressure-packed meet. You see some weird stuff go down, and that's just a product of the amount that's at stake at this type of meet. I couldn't be prouder of Bryden for getting up and breaking 400 at a Zone Championship. When you have a bunch of coaches judging, that's tough to do because we keep it a pretty tight to the vest. He was just a model of consistency today. He nailed some big-money dives. I'm really happy with his performance and getting that win was a big one.
"Nick Stone scraped out a 12th-place finish on 1-meter after nearly posting a personal best with tight judging. Very proud of his performance. Being in the top 12 certainly gives him the opportunity to compete in this event at NCAAs if he can get in on one of the other levels to have another board. So that was big for sure. That was Jake's first time ever to final at the zone meet on 1-meter. He did some extremely nice stuff and very happy with his effort. Owen was consistent but just needs to get a little bit more experience at this level. I couldn't have asked for a better start to this meet."
Competition resumes Monday at 11 a.m. with the women's 1-meter followed by the men's 3-meter. There are 11 qualifying spots for the women and eight for the women. Here's the full schedule along with streaming links.
