March 30, 2023 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas — On Tennessee's first day of competition at the 95th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, three Volunteers qualified for the 400-meter hurdles final to highlight UT's Thursday performances at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Â
Making his collegiate outdoor debut, freshman Clement Ducos was the fastest Vol in prelims with a time of 50.42 seconds. Running his first hurdle race since winning silver at the Mediterranean U23 Championships in September 2022, Ducos placed himself No. 7 on UT's all-time list in the 400-meter hurdles with Thursday's showing.
Â
Tennessee junior Jakwan Hale placed eighth in prelims and grabbed the last qualifying spot on time, running 50.69 in his outdoor season debut. Redshirt junior Rasheeme Griffith won the second heat in 50.78 seconds to book his trip to Friday's final, which will feature three Vols and is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET.
Â
Of nine schools with multiple entries in the men's 400-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays, UT was the only team to have more than one athlete advance to Friday's final.
Â
On the women's side, senior Kyla Robinson-Hubbard logged a new personal-best in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 58.07. The mark finished ninth overall in prelims, missing the cutoff for finals by .06 seconds as the Calabasas, California, native improved her standing as the No. 8 performer in Lady Vol history.
Â
Redshirt junior thrower Chandler Hayden kicked off the meet for the Big Orange in the women's hammer throw competition Thursday morning, heaving her first attempt 62.37 meters (204-7) for a ninth-place finish. The throw was just four centimeters shy of her lifetime best.
Â
UP NEXT: Action from the Lone Star State continues Friday, beginning with Skylar Coffey in the men's discus throw at 10 a.m. ET.
