Four Lady Vols Recognized on CSC Academic All-America Teams
March 20, 2023 | Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving, Tennessee Tailored
Recognizing the nation's top student-athletes for their performances in the pool as well as the classroom, four Lady Vols were named to the 2022-23 College Sports Communicators Academic All-American Teams, marking the most selections in a single year in program history, the organization announced Monday.
Â
After earning All-District recognition earlier this year, Tennessee's Kara Holt and Mona McSharry were tabbed to the CSC Academic All-America first team, while Brooklyn Douthwright and Josephine Fuller earned spots on the third team. This marked the first time in Lady Vol history in which more than two people were selected for the Academic All-America teams, and it was the first time the program ever boasted multiple first team recipients in the same year.
Â
Having been named to the third team last year, Holt was one of five honorees who earned the award for a second time in her career. The senior is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree in Neuroscience and owns a perfect 4.00 GPA. She's a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-America honoree and three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection. She qualified for the NCAA Zone B Championships all four years of her Tennessee career. In addition to her success in the classroom and the pool, Holt was a member of the 2022 SEC Community Service Team and has totaled 102.5 hours of community service throughout her time on Rocky Top. She was a member of the 2022 VOLeaders Class.
Â
A Kinesiology major with a 3.61 GPA, McSharry added to her already impressive and decorated career with the Lady Vols. The 2020 Tokyo Olympian is coming off her best NCAA and SEC Championships yet. After sweeping the breaststroke events at SECs, the junior from Sligo, Ireland, was the national runner-up in the 100 breast and placed fourth overall in the 200 breast at NCAAs. During her career, she's a 17-time All-American, 14-time SEC medalist, three-time SEC Champion and two-time All-SEC selection. She was tabbed to the 2021 CSCAA Scholar All-America First Team and is a two-year selection for the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Â
Majoring in Psychology with a 3.94 GPA, Fuller enjoyed a sensational sophomore season, earning All-America recognition in three different individual events at the NCAA Championships last week. The 2023 SwimSwam Breakout Swimmer of the Year finished fourth overall in the 200 back, seventh in the 100 back and 11th in the 200 IM. She also swam on Tennessee's All-America relays, taking fifth in the 400 medley relay and 11th in the 200 medley relay. A seven-time All-American and seven-time SEC medalist, the Richmond, Virginia, native won silver in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM during the league championships this year. She was a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team selection and SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient as a freshman in 2022.
Â
Excelling in the pool and in the classroom, Douthwright is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, owning a 3.91 GPA. The Riverview, New Brunswick, native wrapped up an incredible sophomore campaign last week, finishing as the national runner-up in the 200 free just one month after earning the title of SEC Champion in the event. During the NCAA Championships, she played an integral role in the Lady Vol relay success, earning All-America First Team honors for finishing fifth overall in both the 800 free relay and the 400 medley relay to go along with second team recognition for placing 10th in the 400 free relay. She was a 2022 CSCAA Scholar All-America First Team and made the SEC Academic Honor Roll last year.
Â
Overall, the Lady Vols boast 17 Academic All-America recipients all time. The most selections in a single year for the women prior to this season was two. Previously, swimming & diving was a part of the at-large category for CoSIDA Academic All-America. This is the first year in which the sport became its own separate category.
