Tennessee DMR Record Demolished Saturday At Alex Wilson Invite
February 18, 2023 | Track & Field, Cross Country
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Tennessee track & field logged its eighth school record of the 2022-23 indoor campaign on Saturday when the men's distance medley relay group of Canaan Anderson, Rasheeme Griffith, Joe Hoots and Yaseen Abdalla combined for a time of 9:22.65 at the Alex Wilson Invitational.
The Vols finished eighth at the meet in one of the fastest DMR fields in collegiate history that included 10 teams below 9:23. Tennessee's mark of 9:22.65 is the third-fastest in the SEC this season and ranks 11th nationally on the 2022-23 NCAA Indoor Qualifying List. Additionally, UT posted the No. 10 all-time performance on an oversized indoor track, as Notre Dame's Meyo Field facility features a 320-meter oval.
Anderson led off the relay running the 1,200-meter leg in a hand-timed split of 2:54.61, while Griffith took the baton 400 meters in 45.87 seconds. Hoots rounded off the 800-meter portion in 1:47.49 before Abdalla capped the historic DMR with a 3:54.61 performance on the 1,600-meter anchor leg.
The foursome topped the previous school record by nearly 11 full seconds. The previous program standard was established in 2007 as Jeff Day, Samdi Fraser, Yarrick Kincaid and Tyler DeVault posted a time of 9:33.61 at the same meet 16 years ago.
Saturday's performance marks the fifth school record in a distance event this season under the guidance of first-year distance coach Sean Carlson. Anderson claimed the UT record in the mile with a time of 4:00.13, while fifth-year standout Dylan Jacobs owns the Tennessee standards in the indoor 3k (7:36.89) and 5k (13:11.01). On the women's side, Jasmine Fehr took down the Lady Vol record in the indoor 5k with a time of 15:38.59 last week in Boston.
This marks the end of the regular indoor season for Tennessee track & field, which now gears up for postseason action next weekend in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The 2023 SEC Indoor Championships run Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25, at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
