Tianna Madison Selected To Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame
February 14, 2023 | Track & Field
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Days after being announced as a member of the University of Tennessee Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2023, former Lady Vol track star Tianna Madison has been named a member of 2023 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class. The six-time All-American and three-time Olympic Champion was surprised by 2022 TSHF inductee Sharrieffa Barksdale in a video released Tuesday by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.
"Tianna's career in track & field at Tennessee and throughout her career has been stellar. From All-American honors to multiple Olympic gold medals, she has excelled at every level," said Brad Willis, Executive Director of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. "We are honored to add an athlete of her caliber to what we believe will be a stacked 2023 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class."
Madison enjoyed a historically successful two-year career with the Tennessee women's track & field program from 2004-05. She led the Lady Vols with 16 points at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships—winning the long jump national title and finishing third in the 60-meter dash—to help UT win the program's first NCAA team championship and Tennessee's first women's NCAA team championship in a sport other than basketball.
Individually, Madison's sophomore year in 2005 featured a clean sweep of long jump gold at the SEC and NCAA Championships during the indoor and outdoor seasons, and she was tabbed the 2005 SEC Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. She finished her Tennessee career as a six-time All-American and currently holds school records in the indoor long jump (6.78m/22-3) and outdoor long jump (6.89m/22-7.25).
Embarking on a prolific professional career after her sophomore season, Madison has claimed six IAAF World Championship medals and represented the United States at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. She struck Olympic gold in 2012 with a world-record performance in the 4x100-meter relay and claimed a pair of golds in 2016, winning the long jump (7.17m/23-6.25) and 4x100-meter relay in Rio.
Madison joins MTSU Baseball legend Stephen B. Smith as inductees into this year's class. The full 2023 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class will be released over the coming weeks.
The 2023 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony, presented by the Tennessee Titans, will be held Saturday, July 22nd at the Omni Nashville Downtown. Ticket information will be announced at a later date.
