Fehr Takes Down Tennessee 5k Record At BU Valentine Invite

BOSTON — Running her second indoor 5,000-meter of the season at Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational, Tennessee graduate student Jasmine Fehr claimed the Lady Vol program record with a time of 15:38.59 Friday night at the BU Track & Tennis Center. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, native clocked a 35-second PR with her record-breaking performance, ranking 12th in the NCAA and fourth in the SEC this season.
Fehr led a trio of Lady Vols at the meet and was the second-fastest collegiate finisher in the women's 5k at Boston. Sophomore Rachel Sutliff placed 14th among collegians with a lifetime-best 16:11.15, followed closely by redshirt sophomore Kayla Gholar who turned in a time of 16:11.39.
Sutliff's mark was good for a 34-second personal best and moved the Grapevine, Texas, native to seventh on the all-time Lady Vol charts for the indoor 5k. Gholar completed her first indoor 5,000-meter and wound up eighth on the UT top 10 list with her performance Friday night.
The Tennessee distance squad also had a contingent of athletes competing at the Music City Challenge in Nashville. True freshman Yordanos Zelinski headlined the group by topping his own UT freshman record in the mile run, clocking in at 4:04.99 on Friday.
Five Lady Vols tabbed indoor PRs in the distance events at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility, including Carolyn Barksdale (4:51.87), Erin Spreen (4:58.56) and Jette Davidson (5:14.22) in the mile and Callie Tucker (16:58.42) and Msgana Araya (17:02.34) in the 5,000-meter.
Redshirt junior thrower Chandler Hayden wrapped up her regular season in the women's invite weight throw competition in Nashville, placing ninth with a heave of 21.20m (69.6-75).
UP NEXT: The Music City Challenge continues Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. ET with the women's unseeded 3,000-meter and concludes at approximately 4:10 p.m. with the men's seeded 800-meter.
In New York City, Tennessee All-American graduate student Dylan Jacobs will run the Dr. Sander Invite 3,000m at the Millrose Games in an elite field featuring numerous Olympians and World Championship qualifiers. The race will air nationally on NBC at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Tennessee's busy weekend will conclude Saturday night with Karl Thiessen, Eli Nahom and Nate Kawalec running the 5k at the BU Valentine Invitational. The event begins at approximately 8:30 p.m. and can be streamed via FloTrack.
