Mid-Distance Victories Highlight Opening Day Of 2023-24 Indoor Season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Freshman Ka'Myya Haywood and sophomore Michael Rodriguez-King picked up a pair of victories on Saturday at the KTCCCA College Opener as Tennessee track & field kicked off its 2023-24 indoor campaign. Haywood finished first in the women's 600-meter run, while Rodriguez-King claimed his first collegiate win in the men's 800-meter competition at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.
The Big Orange swept the men's 800-meter in Louisville with the top-three finishers each donning Tennessee Orange and notching new indoor personal records. Rodriguez-King crossed the line first with a time of 1:51.64 and had a pair of UT freshmen on his heels, as Adam Snoke (1:51.73) and Carter Knox (1:52.29) finished second and third respectively in their collegiate debuts.
A trio of Lady Vols opened their indoor campaigns in the women's 600-meter run at Louisville, and all three garnered top-five finishes for the Big Orange. Haywood led the way with a victory in her collegiate debut, placing first with a mark of 1:31.43 that was 0.7 seconds from tying the Tennessee freshman record of 1:30.73 set by Nicole Cook in 2002.
Two Lady Vol returners also turned in personal-best performances in the 600-meter, with junior Maia Stewart taking third in 1:32.78 and senior Carolyn Barksdale placing fifth with a time of 1:34.63.
The Tennessee distance crew also sent three runners to Boston for the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday. Graduate transfer Dalton Hengst and true freshman Pavel Vinduska suited up for the first time as Volunteers in the third heat of the 3k, posting times of 8:06.77 and 8:14.25. Vinduska's time was a new personal record, improving upon his previous best of 8:18.73 that stands as the Czech Republic U20 National Record.
Sophomore Yordanos Zelinski toed the line for Heat 4 of the men's 3k in Boston, clocking in at 8:14.72 in his season debut.

The Tennessee track & field program returns to action after the holiday break with the Commodore Open (Nashville, Tenn.) and Gamecock Opener (Columbia, S.C.), both scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-13.
