Doubles Dazzle on Day 2 of Michigan Invitational
January 14, 2023 | Women's Tennis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – With the second day of action in the books at the Michigan Invitational, the Tennessee women's tennis team cleaned up in doubles, taking all three matches it played.
The pairing of Lauren Anzalotta and Elza Tomase highlighted the splendid play in doubles, earning the first win of the day for the Lady Volunteers by defeating Ole Miss' Ludmila Kareisova/Reka Zadori, 6-1.
"We got better today," head coach Alison Ojeda said after the matches concluded. "Our doubles teams are really understanding their partners' strengths and are finding ways to set each other up with that in mind. It was as fun for me to coach as it was for them to play."
Doubles concluded with a victory for Rebeka Mertena and Esther Adeshina against Lillian Gabrielsen/Kelsey Mize, 6-3, and a win for Eleonora Molinaro and Daria Kuczer, 6-4, over Anaelle Leclercq-Ficher/Rachel Krzyzak. Both opponents came from Ole Miss.
As doubles shifted to singles action, Anzalotta and Adeshina were able to carry over the momentum, claiming victories of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and 6-4, 6-1, respectively. Anzalotta took her three-set battle over Bayley Sheinin of Michigan while Adeshina topped Merri Kelly, also from Michigan.
"Michigan is a very good indoor ball striking team and they played big from start to finish," Ojeda added, discussing singles play. "It was good for us to see as we prepare for ITA Kickoff Weekend in two weeks. That's a big part of why we are here."
As the Big Orange is set to wrap up the tournament tomorrow, they will face opponents from Ole Miss in the morning singles session at 9 a.m. ET, and will wrap the day up with doubles against Ohio State at noon ET.
"Day 3 will tell us a lot about who we are and what condition we are in," Ojeda concluded saying. "I am very excited for tomorrow."
