January 13, 2023 | Women's Tennis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Completing the first day of action at the Michigan Invitational, the Tennessee women's team posted a strong first session of singles action to kick off the tournament.
"I love this time of year because we finally get to compete as a team, and competing as a team is why we are all here," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We served well, we swung freely and we created opportunities for ourselves. Tomorrow is a new day and another chance to execute the tactics and skills we've been working on."
Of the five singles wins, the highlights came from Rebeka Mertena and Elza Tomase. Mertena, currently ranked #76, toppled #15 Sydni Ratliff in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-4. She followed #68 Tomase who utterly dominated the second set in a 6-4, 6-0, win over #30 Irina Cantos Siemers.
