Pair of Vols Set to Play in 2022 Field of Dreams Game
August 10, 2022 | Baseball
Gomes, Senzel face off not in heaven, but Iowa.
DYERSVILLE, Iowa – For the second time, a former Tennessee Volunteer will participate in the MLB Field of Dreams Game on Thursday night, played in rural Iowa on the same property as the original field from the 1989 film.
With one VFL representing both teams, catcher Yan Gomes will suit up for the Chicago Cubs and he will be opposed by outfielder Nick Senzel and the Cincinnati Reds.
A season ago, Garrett Crochet and the Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Yankees, 9-8, in the first ever Field of Dreams game that drew nearly six million viewers, the most for a regular season game since 2005.
Senzel has been a regular in the Reds lineup, primarily patrolling center field. In 2022, the four-year veteran has played in 80 games with a .248 batting average, three home runs, 18 RBIs and 36 runs scored.
In the other dugout, Yan Gomes has been a solid contributor in his first season on the Northside. The backstop has played in 58 games, posting a .227 average and five big flies on the season. No stranger to spotlight games, Gomes, who has now spent over a decade in The Show, started behind the plate when the 2019 Washington Nationals captured the World Series and was selected for the All-Star game in 2018 when he was in Cleveland.
First pitch in the second edition of the Field of Dreams Game is at 7:15 p.m. ET. Coverage for the game begins at 6 p.m. ET on FOX.   Â
