June 21, 2022 | Women's Basketball
"We Are The W", an inspiring film presented by the WNBA that depicts the multidimensional and truly powerful athletes of the WNBA through the collective stories of three of its stars, highlighting their personal stories, struggles and successes in a novel way, will premiere Tuesday, June 21, on NBA TV at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Featuring three players at different stages of their careers, the film stars veteran Angel McCoughtry, a member of the W25, a collection of the 25 greatest and most influential players in WNBA history; mid-career player Isabelle Harrison of the Dallas Wings; and newcomer Didi Richards of the New York Liberty.
Harrison, a Nashville native (Hillsboro H.S.) who starred at Tennessee from 2011-15, has been in the league since being drafted in the first round with the 12th pick by Phoenix in 2015. The 6-foot-3 post player was a two-time All-SEC recipient and All-America Honorable Mention performer for the Lady Vols who earned SEC Tournament MVP honors in 2014 and made the SEC Academic Honor Roll all four seasons of her college career.Â
"We Are The W" provides an off-the-court lens to these individuals revealing that WNBA players are not just athletes, but that they are also daughters, sisters, scholars, athletes, leaders, activists, survivors and much more.
The film was directed by female duo Shibon Kennedy and Katie McCurdy, who have been collaborating and storytelling as a team for over a decade, having directed projects for Apple, Nike, Puma and Adidas previously. Cousins, female-led production studio, served as the production partner for the film after producing works for renowned artist Kehinde Wiley, Lifetime, PBS and short films for ESPN and Nike.
"We Are The W" will air Tuesday, June 21 on NBA TV at 6:30 p.m. ET leading into the NBA TV doubleheader with the Atlanta Dream hosting the Dallas Wings (7 p.m. ET) followed by the Minnesota Lynx visiting the Phoenix Mercury (10 p.m. ET). The film will also be available on WNBA League Pass starting Tuesday.
