Pissott, USA Race Past Mexico In U18 Quarterfinal, 77-41
June 17, 2022 | Women's Basketball
The USA rode a 29-8 first-quarter wave to a 77-41 victory over Mexico in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 FIBA U18 Women's Americas Championship Friday at Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Â
The USA (4-0), which has won gold in the last nine FIBA U18 Women's Americas Championships and 10 gold medals since the event's inception in 1988, will face off against either Brazil or Puerto Rico on Saturday in the semifinal round. Tip time is TBD, with action again available via video link at https://www.youtube.com/FIBA.
Â
By virtue of their win over Mexico (0-4), the Americans secured a top-four finish at the tournament and a spot at the 2023 FIBA U19 Women's World Cup. That event will take place in Madrid, Spain, July 15-23, 2023.
Â
Both teams were eager to push the pace in the first half Friday, getting up and down the floor quickly. The U.S. scored 20 fastbreak points in the first half alone and broke for 25 on the game, leading Mexico 47-16 at the intermission. The second 20 minutes were much more equal, however, as Mexico applied pressure defense and traps to make for sloppy play and limit the USA to only a 30-25 advantage over the final two quarters.
Â
Tennessee freshman Justine Pissott logged 12:34 of playing time, with most of it coming during the first half. The 6-foot-4 wing from Toms River, N.J., finished with two points, three rebounds and three assists, hitting both of her free throw attempts and missing on her only field goal try, a three-pointer.
A five-star recruit from Red Bank Catholic High School, Pissott was ranked No. 11 overall and the No. 2 wing in the class of 2022 espnW 100, was named an All-American by both McDonald's and the WBCA, and was a participant in the Jordan Brand Classic.
