Pinnock Named SEC Freshman of the Week
April 19, 2022 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman jumper Wayne Pinnock has been tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week after a record-setting performance over the weekend at the War Eagle Invitational.
Pinnock leaped 8.06m (26-5.5) Friday at Auburn's War Eagle Invitational en route to winning the men's long jump competition. With the mark, the Kingston, Jamaica, native leads the Southeastern Conference and is tied for the best wind-legal jump in the nation this season.
The jumper also set the Tennessee freshman record with the leap, surpassing the 40-year-old rookie record of 7.89m (25-10.75) set by Greg Neal in 1982.
This weekend marked Pinnock's first competition since winning the men's indoor long jump national title in March.
It is the first weekly honor for Pinnock and the third overall for the Vols this season after rookie sprinter Favour Ashe won a pair of freshman of the week honors during the indoor season.
The Vols and Lady Vols return to action this weekend as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the Crimson Tide Invite.
