Cross Tied for Lead, Vols Tied for Second Through Nearly Two Rounds at Lewis Chitengwa Memorial

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 20th-ranked Tennessee men's golf team concluded the opening day at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial just one stroke out of the lead Monday, while senior Spencer Cross is tied for the individual lead.

The 13-team field was aiming to play two rounds on Monday, but play was suspended at 7:35 p.m. ET due to darkness. Round two competition will resume Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET and round three play will begin immediately following the conclusion of round two.

Through nearly two full rounds on Monday, Tennessee shot 11-under as a team, one stroke back from the tournament leader and host school Virginia and tied with Charlotte.

Tied atop the individual leaderboard with two other golfers, Cross is 7-under through 33 holes entering Tuesday. Cross made a field-leading 11 total birdies on Monday, including four straight to start the back nine of round two.

Cross has 10 career top-10 finishes and five career top-five finishes, but has never captured an individual title. Cross' career-best finish came at the 2018 Inverness Intercollegiate, where he finished third.

Also inside the top 10, Bryce Lewis is 5-under with two holes to go in round two. Lewis shot 1-under during round one and is 4-under during round two—having made birdies on four of seven holes on the back nine. Lewis made seven total birdies on Monday. The redshirt sophomore is seeking a fourth top-10 finish of the season.

Just outside the top 25 but within striking distance of his third consecutive top-25 finish, Tyler Johnson is tied for 26th after shooting even par through 35 holes on Monday. Johnson shot a bogey-free 3-under during round one, but is 3-over during round two with one hole to go.

Jake Hall gave Tennessee its final counting round during round one, shooting 1-over over the course of the first 18 holes. Through 16 holes during round two, Hall is 2-over, bringing his 34-hole score to 3-over. Hall is currently tied for 44th place.

Hunter Wolcott shot 5-over for Tennessee during round one, but is 1-over through 16 holes of round two. Wolcott is tied for 59th place.
