ATLANTA – Two Vols qualified for the NCAA Championships on the platform Wednesday at McAuley Aquatic Center, concluding the Zone B Championships.
Sophomore Bryden Hattie finished second overall in the event, posting a combined score of 848.90. A two-time medalist at SECs in the event, he opened finals with the top-scoring dives of the first and second rounds, highlighted by earning an 83.20 mark on an inward 3 1/2 somersault tuck. He scored a 438.40 during the impressive finals showing to complete the qualifying sweep for NCAAs.
The story of the day was Jacob Reasor. The sophomore made a statement in prelims by throwing down a personal-best score of 357.55, which ranked ninth in program history. After getting behind early in the finals, he closed out with back-to-back solid dives to claim the seventh and final qualifying spot for NCAAs.
"My expectations went pretty high that Bryden would be right up there in contention for the top spot, and it was a really nice battle and finish," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "There was no telling what order they were going to finish, so today was a really nice tune up so to speak. He responded to the challenge and did his job. It was fantastic to see him get that third qualification under his belt.
"As you mentioned, Jake was the story of the day, as he had a personal best in his first round. The number of spots are so much less on the platform, but he landed on his head. He killed his last dive. A clutch dive and a clutch moment to secure a spot for him. It was an exciting moment for that young man, and we are very proud of him."
For the week, four different Tennessee divers punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships. Three of the four qualified for multiple events.
"It was an awesome week for the Tennessee diving crew," Parrington. "Four divers qualifying, Elle Renner came up just a little bit short, but for those who qualified, we are very happy and very excited the chance to make it to the championships and win some points for our teams at NCAAs."
