UT Divers Qualify for NCAAs on Men’s 3-Meter, Women’s Platform

ATLANTA – Tennessee diving had another strong day of performances during Day 3 of the Zone B Championships on Tuesday at McAuley Aquatic Center, with three divers earning their second NCAA-qualifying marks.
Senior Grace Cable threw together a pair of great rounds during prelims and finals on the platform. After opening the day with a 253.30 mark, she recorded a career-high score of 262.10 to finish eighth overall and earn her second qualifying spot at NCAAs. Her finals score was less than two points from ranking inside the top-10 all time in UT history. Junior Elle Renner narrowly missed qualifying, finishing less than two points shy of ninth place, which was the final spot.
"I'm really happy with Grace's solid performance, culminating qualifying with a personal-best score," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "She had some key clutch dives that got her through to the final and on to NCAAs. For Elle, this was another huge and competitive growing experience for her. Going into the last dive, she was about 17 points off the qualifying pace, and I told her this was a defining moment for her career. She scored the best she ever had on that dive to get right in the mix, but she came up just short in the end. I was happy to see her step up and compete in the event. Kara Holt just missed making the top 18 and could have been in the mix as well had she made it to the finals."
On the men's side, sophomore Bryden Hattie and senior Matthew Wade qualified for their second event at the NCAA Championships thanks to their performances on the 3-meter. Hattie, who won bronze in the event at SECs, finished fourth overall behind a 406.90 score. He had three dives that ranked as the second-highest scores for the respective rounds. Wade placed sixth with an overall score of 755.35.
"There was a lot of pressure taken off after yesterday, because that was the hard part with an event that had fewer qualifying spots," Parrington said. "They came out and put together solid performances on the 3-meter. I was proud of them for the way they competed today and got the job done."
The zone championships conclude with the men's platform prelims beginning at noon ET followed immediately by the finals. The top seven divers from finals will advance to NCAAs.
