Vols Sweep Men’s 800-Meter Run At Clemson Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Tennessee Volunteers opened the 2022-23 indoor track & field season finishing 1-2-3 in the men's 800-meter run Friday afternoon at the Clemson Opener, led by redshirt senior Joe Hoots who claimed the event title in 1:49.80.
The Nashville native ran just 0.3 seconds shy of his indoor lifetime-best in his season debut en route to victory inside the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex. Redshirt junior Will Mazur took second in 1:51.88, followed by freshman Michael Rodriguez-King who turned in a time of 1:53.85 in his collegiate debut.
Fourth-year junior Kameron Helmlinger rounded the men's 800m contingent for the Big Orange, finishing sixth with a mark of 1:56.43.
Lady Vols Carolyn Barksdale and Maia Stewart kicked off the season for Tennessee in the women's 800-meter, placing fourth and fifth overall, respectively. Barksdale crossed the line among the lead pack of the first heat in 2:13.67, less than a second behind the event winner from South Carolina, while Stewart opened her sophomore season taking fifth in 2:18.95.
Tennessee's opening weekend continues Saturday at Boston University with Yaseen Abdalla and Jasmine Fehr competing at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Abdalla will run the men's 3,000-meter at approximately 3:13 p.m., while Fehr will make her Tennessee indoor debut in the 5,000-meter at 4:30.
