BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After several impressive performances during Tennessee's win against UNC Wilmington last week, three Vols swept the SEC weekly honors, the league announced Tuesday.
Sophomore Jordan Crooks brought home the SEC Swimmer of the Week honors, junior Bryden Hattie was named SEC Diver of the Week, and freshman Gui Caribe was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week.
Crooks, who has now garnered three conference weekly honors in his career, picked up where he left off from last season. The George Town, Cayman Islands, native excelled in his primary event of the 50 free, touching the wall in 19.36 to post the top time in the nation so far this season by .33 seconds. He earned his second victory of the day when he notched the fastest time in the 100 fly with a 46.81 mark, which ranks second in the SEC and third in the country.
Crooks was also a member of the 200 medley relay lineup (1:28.35/20.66), swimming the butterfly leg, that took first place. Competing as an exhibition entry, Crooks anchored the 200 free relay squad that touched the wall in 1:20.27 (19.33).
Now a three-time SEC Diver of the Week recipient, Hattie led the way on the boards during UT's win against the Seahawks, sweeping the 1-meter and 3-meter events. The Victoria, British Columbia, native nearly recorded a personal-best on the 3-meter with a 412.30 score, which ranks second in the country and leads the SEC. During the event, he notched three scores of more than 70 points, highlighted by a Forward 3 1/2 Somersault Pike on his final dive that netted him a 77.50 score. On the 1-meter, he posted the top score of 324.65.
Making his collegiate debut, Caribe enjoyed a successful start to his career, winning the 100 free (43.86) and finishing second in the 50 free (20.22). The Salvador, Brazil, native owns the fifth- (100 free) and 11th- (50 free) best times in the country. His 43.86 time in the 100 free is the fastest of any freshman in the country, while he's the second-fastest freshman in the 50 free.
Caribe was also a member of the 200 medley relay lineup (1:28.51/19.92), swimming the freestyle leg, that finished second. Competing as an exhibition entry, Caribe swam the third leg of the 200 free relay squad that touched the wall in 1:20.27 (19.87).
Up next, Tennessee will take on a pair of tough opponents from the ACC in NC State (Oct. 14-15) and Louisville (Oct. 20). The meet against NC State will be UT's home opener for the season.
