Vols Capture Second Straight Tournament Title, Lewis Wins Individual Title
October 11, 2022 | Men's Golf
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Just two weeks removed from its first team tournament title of the season, the seventh-ranked Tennessee men's golf team captured a second straight team win, claiming a 12-stroke victory at the Purdue Fall Invitational Tuesday.
Â
Redshirt junior Bryce Lewis completed the sweep for the Vols, capturing the individual title by four full strokes, shooting 8-under for the tournament.
Â
The team title marked Tennessee's seventh under the direction of head coach Brennan Webb and second occurrence of back-to-back title wins after the Vols won the first two tournaments of Webb's tenure in 2018-19.
Â
Lewis' win stands as the second of his collegiate career—joining the 2021 Country Club of Birmingham Invitational. It also marks the sixth time a Vol has won an individual title under Webb's direction. Lewis is the first Vol to win multiple individual titles since Webb arrived on Rocky Top.
Â
In addition to Lewis' title-winning performance, the other four members of Tennessee's lineup also showed out—each finishing inside the top 30.
Â
Redshirt sophomore Cade Russell recorded his best career finish as a member of Tennessee's lineup—shooting 1-over and finishing tied for seventh place. Russell shot two rounds under par and contributed three counting rounds for the Vols.
Â
Redshirt freshman Lance Simpson, competing in his third collegiate tournament, recorded his second straight top-20 finish—tying for 16th place. Simpson shot 6-over in round one before improving to even par in round two and 1-under in round three—both counting rounds for the Vols.
Â
Giving Tennessee a fourth top-25 finisher, redshirt junior Jake Hall recorded his fifth career top-25 finish with a 7-over performance.
Â
Contributing two counting rounds for the Vols, Caleb Surratt finished tied for 29th place. Surratt rebounded from a 9-over score in round two to shoot even par in Tuesday's final round—his team-high-tying seventh round of par or better this season.
