Sydney Seymour Wins Women’s 3-Mile, Vols and Lady Vols Sweep Tennessee Dual
September 03, 2021 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2021 season with a sweep of Louisville Friday morning at the Cherokee Farms Cross Country Course. The women's team won the 3-mile run, while the men won the 4-mile.
"It was a great win for the men and women," director of track & field and cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "It was a great way to start the year. We feel we have two really good teams. We didn't want to come in and just go through the motions. We wanted to go out and race hard, and you saw the victors from that. Really excited about how people look, how some incoming freshmen helped us on the women's side, how our returners have really stepped their game up. You can see the work they put in over the summer, the growth they made last year and during a COVID year. It's just paying out now so we're thrilled with the wins."
Lady Vol Sydney Seymour paced the women as she crossed the line first in the women's 3-mile. The Seven Hills, Ohio, native finished in 16:53.85, breaking 17 minutes for the first time. It is the second consecutive race win by Seymour on home soil after winning the Tennessee Tri-Star in 2019.
"Yeah, going back-to-back for Sydney and Karl Thiessen almost got the win," Alford-Sullivan said. "But just to give a perspective, I think Syd's time a couple of years ago was about 17:36 or 17:37. Today, she broke 17 minutes."
Along with Seymour's victory, Katie Thronson and Olivia Janke finished second and third with times of 17:15.85 and 17:26.65, respectively. A total of eight Lady Vols placed inside the top 10 as Brooke Dixon, Kayla Gholar, Rachel Sutliff Landri Wilcox and Avery Jackson finished fifth through eighth.
Thiessen led the Volunteer pack on the men's side, finishing second in 20:00.27, just two hundredths behind the leader. Alex Crigger came third with a time of 20:19.23, while Eli Nahom, Riley Buchholz, Conner Hawkins and Canaan Anderson rounded out the Vols in the top 10.
"I can't say enough about Karl and Criggs," Alford-Sullivan said. "They've been teammates for a long time and they want this. They are from the same area and Tennessee, you know, it means the world so we're excited about how they opened up."
UP NEXT
Tennessee next heads to Huntsville, Alabama, for the North Alabama Invite on Sept. 17. The race will give the Vols and Lady Vols a preview of the course they will run on at NCAA South Regionals.
