Tennessee Athletics Brings Home Five Medals from Tokyo Olympics

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – With five medals won and several national records broken in Tokyo, University of Tennessee athletes enjoyed another successful trip to the Olympic Games.

Overall, UT's Olympians have won a combined 68 medals (41 gold, 15 silver, 12 bronze). Tennessee athletes have brought home at least five medals in every Olympics since the 1992 games.

Kara Lawson guided Team USA to the gold in the first-ever 3x3 women's basketball Olympic competition, while Kelsey Robinson secured a gold medal with the U.S. volleyball team. Monica Abbott and the USA national softball squad brought home the silver medal after returning to the summer games for the first time since 2008. Erika Brown won two medals with Team USA swimming, grabbing the silver in the 4x100 medley relay and the bronze in the 4x100 freestyle relay.

Winning her second silver medal, Abbott dominated the competition once again. The Lady Vol great made six appearances in the tournament, throwing 20.1 innings with one unearned run allowed and finishing the Olympics with tournament-best marks in ERA (0.00), wins (3) and strikeouts (31) for Team USA.

In the pool, Brown became the sixth Vol or Lady Vol swimmer to win two medals in a single Olympics, joining Jeremy Linn, Christine Magnuson, Tripp Schwenk, Melvin Stewart and Matt Vogel. Making her second Olympic appearance, Kira Toussaint competed in three different event finals for the Netherlands, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the 4x100 freestyle relay. Mona McSharry became just the second Irish swimmer ever to compete in an Olympic final, advancing in the 100-meter breaststroke. She bested her Irish National Record in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:25.08, while Lyubomir Epitropov posted a Bulgarian National Record with a time of 2:09.68 in the men's 200 breast.

Robinson and Team USA volleyball defeated Brazil to win the first-ever Olympic gold medal for the U.S. in women's volleyball. For Robinson, it marked her second Olympic medal after winning bronze with during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
