July 23, 2021 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Beth Alford-Sullivan announced Friday the hiring of Assistant Coach Nick Newman.
A renowned jumps coach, Newman will lead a young, strong and talented Tennessee jumps group that is headlined by 2020 Tokyo Olympian Carey McLeod.
"I am thrilled to have Nick join my program here on Rocky Top," Alford-Sullivan said. "Coach Newman is a world class jumps coach, with proven results for both men and women. His expertise in coaching will be instrumental in helping the Tennessee Vols and Lady Vols reach the top of the podium. My staff and I are excited to begin working with Coach Newman, as he has an authentic and collaborative coaching style. He has been a coach of the most recent national championship team and he is bringing that winning mentality to Tennessee."
Newman joins Tennessee following two seasons with the University of Southern California that culminated in winning the 2021 NCAA Women's Track and Field National Championship team title.
Newman made an immediate impact as a Trojan with the signing of three national champions in his first recruiting class. During the 2021 season, USC's jumps group scored 61.5 points at the Pac-12 Championships en route to the conference title and qualified five athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Further highlights include guiding Earnie Sears III to multiple All-American honors and a USC indoor high jump school-record of 2.30m. Triple jumper Jordan Scott earned the 2021 Pac-12 title and achieved the No. 4 all-time USC mark of 16.96m.
Newman also led the freshman duo of Morgan Smalls and Temi Ojora. Smalls won the Pac-12 title and achieved indoor and outdoor All-American honors in the high jump with a new USC indoor high jump record of 1.82m. Smalls also set a new long jump PR of 6.53m, placing her fourth on the USC all-time list and ranking her as the No. 5 junior in the world.
Ojora set a new USC freshman record in the triple jump with a mark of 13.62m (No. 5 junior in the world). Ojora placed fourth at the 2021 U20 European Athletics Championships while representing Great Britain.
Prior to his tenure at USC, Newman spent three seasons at the University of California-Berkeley, where he coached 10 student-athletes to top-10 marks on Cal's indoor and outdoor lists. Newman guided Tuomas Kaukolahti to back-to-back Pac-12 titles in the men's triple jump as well as multiple All-American honors.
"Joining the Tennessee staff is an incredible opportunity and one I am very excited about," Newman said. "I want to thank Coach Alford-Sullivan and her staff for welcoming me to their team. I can't wait to build on the Vols' rich jumps history and contribute to the team's continued success."
Newman published his first book, "The Horizontal Jumps: Planning for Long Term Development" in 2012. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science from Manhattan College in 2006 and a Master's Degree in Human Performance & Sport Psychology from California State University, Fullerton, in 2009. Newman also holds several coaching and strength and conditioning qualifications.
Originally from England, Newman represented his country in two international competitions and achieved a personal-best long jump of 7.80m (25-7.00) in 2012.
