Tennessee Women’s Tennis Earns Four ITA Regional Awards
June 15, 2021 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women's tennis team collected four ITA Ohio Valley Region Playing Awards for their efforts in the 2020-21 campaign, the association announced on Monday.
Head coach Alison Ojeda was named the ITA Ohio Valley Coach of the Year for the second time in her career and assistant coach Jarryd Chaplin was named the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year.
"Regarding our coaching staff, Jarryd Chaplin is one of the best on-court coaches I have ever seen," Ojeda said. "He has a natural ability to concisely deliver a message that commands a sense of urgency from our players. Every student athlete on our team has improved since he has joined our program.
Under the direction of Ojeda and Chaplin, Tennessee closed out the season with a 17-9, 8-5 SEC record. UT made their fourth-straight postseason appearance and posted a perfect 11-0 ledger at home - marking the fourth time in program history that the Lady Vols have gone undefeated at home in a full season. The Lady Vols concluded the season ranked 18th nationally, their highest year-end ranking under Ojeda.
Senior Johanna Silva was earned the ITA Ohio Valley Region Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award. She becomes just the second Lady Vol to recieve the distinction, joining Ojeda who picked up the award in 2001. Hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Silva wrapped up an impressive career in her final season on Rocky Top.
Silva leaves Rocky Top ranked 14th all-time in solo victories with 88. The 2019 ITA Ohio Valley Most Improved Senior is also a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member and Division I ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athlete.
The team as a whole earned ITA Community Service Award Honorable Mention for the Ohio Valley Region.
