Tennessee Wins Eight Races On Day One At ORCI

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- The Lady Vols had a solid showing in the first two sessions of the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite, finishing first in eight of their 10 races.
In the first session, Tennessee matched up against No. 20 SMU and Notre Dame. In UT's first race of the day, the 1V8 posted a time of 6:16.852, besting SMU by nearly eight seconds and Notre Dame by almost 14. UT's 1V4 took a commanding win, finishing in 7:03.997 while SMU crossed at 7:15.584 and the Fighting Irish at 7:21.564. The Tennessee N8 held steady with Notre Dame through the majority of the race but was edged out in the final 100 meters, finishing three seconds behind the Fighting Irish with a time of 6:56.989. The Mustangs did not enter a boat in that race. The Lady Vols also managed a comfortable win in the 2V8 race, recording a time of 6:24.434, nearly 11 seconds faster than second-place SMU and a full 24 seconds better than Notre Dame. In the final race of the first session, UT's 2V4 made it down the course in 7:14.532, the Mustangs finished in 7:20.812, and Notre Dame posted a time of 7:24.021.Â
Tennessee went head-to-head with Tulsa and Clemson in the afternoon session, finishing first in four of the five races. UT's 1V8 managed a time of 6:18.436 to finish four seconds ahead of the Golden Hurricane and nearly 11 seconds ahead of the Tigers. The UT 1V4 again notched a decisive win, making it down the course in 7:06.384 with Clemson and Tulsa crossing the line 11 seconds later in a photo finish. The Big Orange N8 notched a time of 7:05.044 but was bested by the Tigers who took first with a time of 6:56.436. The 2V8 was a close affair with all three boats crossing the finish line less than six seconds apart, but UT recorded the top time at 6:27.980. In the last race of the day, the Tennessee 2V4 took first with a time of 7:24.400 while Tulsa and Clemson crossed 12 seconds later in another photo finish.Â
Racing will continue tomorrow with the third and final session in which the Lady Vols will face off against No. 16 Alabama and No. 11 Indiana.  The 1V8s will start down the course at 11:24 a.m., and the final race of the regatta will begin at 11:56 a.m. with the 2V4s.Â
