Jefcoat's Record-Setting Performance Earns SEC Athlete of the Week Honors
February 09, 2021 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tennessee track & field senior Hannah Jefcoat has been selected as the Southeastern Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week, as the league office announced its weekly honors Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The Dacula, Georgia, native topped her own all-time Tennessee record in the pole vault this past weekend at the Doc Hale Elite Meet in Blacksburg, Virginia. On her third attempt at the bar, Jefcoat broke the 14-foot barrier for the first time in her career as she towered over 4.34 meters (14-2.75) on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Jefcoat's performance at Virginia Tech improved her personal-best by nine centimeters, as she set the previous program standard of 4.25 meters (13-11.25) on February 29, 2020 at the SEC Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas.
Â
Four weeks into the regular indoor season, Jefcoat has herself in a solid position to qualify for the 2021 NCAA Indoor National Championships. Her mark of 4.34 meters (14-2.75) currently ranks No. 6 in the NCAA and No. 3 in the SEC this season.
Â
This is the first weekly conference honor of Jefcoat's career and the second for Tennessee during the 2021 campaign. Senior triple jumper Jalen Tate was named SEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week on January 26 after recording an NCAA-leading leap of 16.38 meters (53-9) at the Hokie Invitational.
Â
The Vols and Lady Vols will wrap up the regular indoor season with a pair of meets this weekend, competing at the Tiger Paw Invitational (Clemson, S.C.) and Music City Challenge (Nashville) on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13.
