Walshe, Crooks Receive SEC Weekly Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee swimmers Ellen Walshe and Jordan Crooks received SEC weekly honors this week, as helped the Vols and Lady Vols sweep the 2021 Tennessee Invitational.
Walshe, who was named the SEC Female Swimmer of the Week, had a weekend for the record books as she helped the Lady Vols defeat top-ranked Virginia and No. 16 Alabama. The Dublin, Ireland, native, posted six podium finishes and five individual top-10 performances in program history throughout the weekend.

The highlight of the meet for Walshe came in the 100 fly final, when she threw down the nation leading mark of 50.24. The time vaulted her into second in the Lady Vol record books and also made her the second fastest freshman ever to swim the 100-yard fly event.

Walshe would go on to finish second in the 200 fly (1:53:96) and 200 IM (1:54:77) with SEC-leading times that rank third nationally. Only swimming the 400 IM during prelims, she posted the sixth-fastest time (4:06:07) in the country, which ranks second in the SEC and fist among league freshmen.

Leading off the 400 and 800 freestyle relays, Walshe threw down splits of 48.70 and 1:44:63, respectively. Both marks are the fastest among conference freshmen, with her 200 free time ranking ninth in the country and her 100 free time checking in at 17th overall. She also helped UT's medley relay (1:35:89) and 400 medley relay (3:28:91) to podium finishes and NCAA A Cut times, ranking fifth nationally and second in the SEC in both events.

Crooks earned SEC Male Freshman of the Week honors after winning two races and helping UT's relay teams to four podium finishes, as the Vols defeated No. 7 Virginia, No. 23 UNLV and No. 24 Alabama to win the invite. He took first in the 50 free (19.39) and 100 free (42.41) en route to being the top scoring on the men's side of the meet (64 points). His 50 time, which moved into fourth in program history, ranks 18th in the country and first among SEC freshmen.

The George Town, Cayman Islands, native helped the Vols take second in the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and 800 free relay throughout the weekend. Crooks ended the meet with a bang, as he delivered a personal-best 100 free split of 42.33 during the 400 free relay. The time ranks eighth nationally and is the top mark among freshmen this season.
